Friday was the release date for the Magic the Gathering’s Kaldheim Pre-release packs (official dates on the promo cards are January 30-31, 2021). These pre-release packs are always released one week before the official set release. Kaldheim is scheduled to release on February 5.
Before I go any further I just want to say that I’m more a collector than a gamer; I love the thrill of finding that rare card (rare as in hard to find, not the MTG Rare definition) when opening a booster pack (who doesn’t?). So, for someone like me, value comes from return on investment: if I pay $30 for something, I want it to be worth at least that. But, for a gamer, the value comes from what that card can bring to the game.
Why am I telling you this? Because I was disappointed with the cards I pulled in those 3 pre-release packs. I pulled some great cards for the game, but the $ value fell short. Out of 18 booster packs I only pulled 2 cards worth more than $10 ($15 & $14) and these weren’t even Mythic Rare cards. Again, out of 18 booster packs, I pulled 2 Mythic Rare cards with a combined value of $17! If I add the value of all the cards worth $3 or more (11 cards) I arrive at $85. With taxes I paid $103.50 for those 3 packs.
This said, my son pulled 5 Mythic Rare cards in a single pre-release pack (6 booster packs) including a Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider promo card which is probably the most expensive promo card in the set (promo cards prices not yet available).
It’s all about luck and accepting that we’ll have some good pulls and some bad ones. In the end, it should even itself out. Plus, it’s hard to put a value on the thrill of it all. 😊
